BRBC discuss future Bow River management

The Bow River Basin Council (BRBC) held a presentation at the RancheHouse on the importance of water management in the basin, highlighting key areas, such as climate change and drought, which have adverse affects on the Bow River’s water supply.

Keynote speaker Shawn Marshal from the University of Calgary said the purpose of the meeting was to get all stakeholders together to plan and work as a cohesive unit to enable the best possible preparation for the future and the perils it may hold.

River Heights to see new 100-unit condo building

Council approved a land-use amendment on Nov. 26 to allow the development of multi-family dwellings in River Heights to move forward.

Despite opposing votes from Mayor Truper McBride and councillor Jeff Toews, the amendment redesignated a 2.43 hectare parcel of land from urban reserve to R-3.

The plan is to construct a multi-family residential condominium that will hold a total of 100 units, townhouse style with front-loaded garages.

Revitalization levy public hearing Thursday

A public hearing is set to go this Thursday on a community revitalization levy that could go a long way in changing the face of downtown Cochrane.

Town council gave first reading to the community revitalization levy plan that calls for tapping into the educational tax and municipal property tax for 62.5 acres of largely undeveloped land to fund four major public infrastructure improvement projects.

Hirsch high on Alberta’s economy

AIRDRIE – Todd Hirsch, senior economist at ATB Financial, called Airdrie an economic “outlier” during a speech before members of the Airdrie business community at Woodside Golf Course on Wednesday.

He was reacting to news from City of Airdrie Economic Development team leader Kent Rupert that shows Airdrie grew in population by 5.92 per cent in 2012, attracted $95 million in residential development and a further $86 million in commercial and school development.

Grande Prairie has Alberta’s largest number of filed patents

When you think of Grande Prairie you probably don’t think about patents, but the northern Alberta city happens to produce more of them than just about anywhere else in the province. While Grande Prairie is home to only five per cent of Alberta’s population, 40 per cent of the province’s patent inquiries originate from there.

Alfred H. Savage Centre opens its doors

Trail hikers and sledders in the Whitemud Park area now have a new place to warm up and reboot as the Alfred H. Savage Centre opened its doors to the public last week.

The centre, which is located at the base of the park’s toboggan hill along Keillor Road near the Whitemud Trailhead, will serve as a hub for outdoor education and environmental programs such as orienteering or snowshoeing, as well as being a space for community gatherings.

Athabasca sanctions $536M oilsands project

CALGARY — Athabasca Oil Corp. announced Wednesday it has sanctioned the construction for $536 million of the 12,000-barrel-per-day first phase of its Hangingstone oilsands project.

The project and another called Birch are to be 50 per cent funded through a joint venture partnership. Athabasca has said it has a tentative deal with two international partners, one of which is believed to be the Kuwait national oil company, but is waiting for finalization before revealing details.

Deficit as high as $3 billion likely in 2012-13, finance officials say

EDMONTON – Alberta continues to be on track to run a deficit as high as $3 billion in the 2012-13 fiscal year, provincial finance officials said Wednesday.

Speaking to the second-quarter results, Finance Minister Doug Horner said the budget problems revealed in the first-quarter financial update continued during July, August and September.

Regional transit study parked

It will take a while longer before Okotoks residents can hop aboard public commuter transit buses to and from Calgary.

The Calgary Regional Partnership (CRP) is currently investigating whether it’s better for commuter buses to be owned and operated by a regional transit committee or by individual municipalities. As a result, Okotoks council voted on Monday to postpone the second phase of a study looking into the feasibility of transit in Okotoks until sometime next year when the CRP’s work is complete.
