Three commercial projects among building permits in January

Commercial development accounted for about one-third of the value of construction permitted in January, according to month-end figures issued by the town.

Permits were issued for three commercial construction projects. The permit for a change in use and renovations for Hot Yoga Studio to locate in the neighbourhood mall at 117 Lakeway Blvd. was valued at $264,000. Tenant improvements were permitted for Prairie Dawgs in Hewlett Park Landing valued at $189,600 and for Liberty Tax Service in Ryders Square valued at $77,600.

County grants Clairmont Heights area structure plan final approval

The future of Clairmont has a definitive focus with the passing of third reading of the County of Grande Prairie’s Clairmont Heights area structure plan.

The 50-year plan will align the predicted growth of Clairmont with the amenities needed to sustain that growth when the population reaches an estimated 15,000.

Alberta Premier sees light at end of Keystone pipeline

WASHINGTON – Alberta Premier Alison Redford came to Washington Friday determined to sell the Keystone XL pipeline to a nation who’s climate change concerns are increasing with each new hurricane, drought and wildfire. On Sunday she flew back confident – but “not at all smug” – that the 1,800-kilometre pipeline is on its way to approval.

“I’m very optimistic,” she said. “There is strong bipartisan support for this project.”

Plan for new Peace River neighbourhood receives approval

A new neighbourhood for Peace River is one step closer to realization, gaining unanimous approval from the Town of Peace River Council at its last regular meeting (Jan. 28).

The Peace Ridge Area Structure Plan – which would see the development of the area south of the ATCO Gas office, south-west of Weaver Welding on the west hill – past third reading seamlessly.

The development is set to be phased over time (an estimated ten years) based on demand, but allows for a total of 114 manufactured homes, 104 apartment units and 39 semi-detached condo units as well as 55 units of medium density row-housing.

Energy minister gives tentative approval for one west-to-east oil pipeline, considers another

OTTAWA — The federal government is firming up its support of two projects that would see oil from Alberta piped to Atlantic Canada.

Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver says he has given tentative approval of one proposal to industry giant Irving Oil.

“I met with Arthur Irving (Irving Oil’s CEO) and expressed the support of the government of Canada, in principle, for this initiative,” Oliver said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

Council approves revised downtown Edmonton arena deal

EDMONTON – City council voted 10-3  Wednesday to approve a revised deal that will pave the way for construction of a downtown arena.

City manager Simon Farbrother said he worked out details of a summary agreement with the Katz Group this week that’s 95 per cent similar to a framework accepted by the city in October 2011.

The major change is cost. The city faces a $15-million increase in what it will pay, mainly because the two sides will split the increase in the cost of the 18,559-seat facility, now at $480 million, up from $450 million.

RVC contributes $250,000 to artificial turf assoc.

The Cochrane Turf Association will receive $250,000 in Rocky View funds to help with the development of an artificial turf playing field.

At the regular meeting of Rocky View County Council on Nov. 27, councillors approved the community recreation capital-funding request of $200,000 from the Ranch Lands Recreation Board, and $50,000 from the Rocky View West Recreation Board.

Second phase of seniors home gets green light

The second phase of construction for a local seniors care facility got the green light to go ahead from St. Albert city council on Monday afternoon.

Councillors voted unanimously to issue a development permit and allow the construction of the second phase of the Rosedale assisted living complex at 20 Hebert Rd., contingent on a number of conditions.

Permit issued for five bay commercial building at Hinshaw and Herder

A five bay commercial building at the corner of Hinshaw and Herder accounted for more than half of the total construction permitted in October.

The building is the second for the complex on the south side of Herder Drive which currently houses a Fas Gas gas bar, convenience store and the Last Chance Liquor Store. Its construction is valued at $1,113,750, according to month-end statistics released by the town Monday.
