Job creation upswing

Thanks to a strong industrial base, Strathcona County has experienced a 9.7 per cent bump in job creation in 2012 compared to the previous year.

“Last year, in Strathcona County there were 48,270 jobs,” Tourism and Economic Development director Gerry Gabinet reported to county council on Tuesday, March 26. “That compares to the previous year of about 43,558. So, that is 4,700 new jobs created in Strathcona County and a 9.7 per cent increase.

Employment Insurance beneficiaries drop in Alberta

CALGARY — The number of people receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits in Alberta has dropped by nearly 11 per cent compared with last year, says Statistics Canada.

The federal agency reported Thursday that 28,800 people were receiving benefits in January. That’s down 740 from December or 2.5 per cent and off by 3,440 from January 2012 or 10.7 per cent.

Upbeat hiring climate expected for Calgary

CALGARY — Calgary area employers expect an upbeat hiring climate for the second quarter of 2013, according to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey released Tuesday.

“Survey data reveals that 23 per cent of employers plan to hire for the upcoming quarter (April to June), while none anticipate cutbacks,” said Randy Upright, chief executive of Manpower’s Alberta Region.

Alberta employment continues to rise

CALGARY — Employment continued to rise in Alberta in February keeping the province’s unemployment rate at 4.5 per cent — the second lowest in the country behind Saskatchewan’s 3.8 per cent.

Statistics Canada reported Friday that 4,200 new jobs were created in Alberta during the month which was up 0.2 per cent from the previous month. Year-over-year, there were 52,900 new jobs created in the province, up 2.5 per cent.

Small Firms Plan for Stronger Economy

Despite looming federal spending cuts, higher tax rates and rising health-care costs, small-business owners were more optimistic this month about the future state of the U.S. economy.

More than a third, or 35%, of owners said they expect the economy to improve in the coming year, according to a survey fielded from Feb. 4 to Feb. 13.
