The value of Canadian building permits surged past expectations in March to jump by 8.6 percent, primarily due to non-residential construction plans but also helped by a rebound in multi-family housing, Statistics Canada said on Monday.
Market players in a Reuters poll had forecast a 1 percent increase in building permits in the month. Statscan revised its February figure to a gain of 1.5 percent, from 1.7 percent.

The Town of Stony Plain has released its first quarter building statistics for 2013.
While the number of permits issued for new residential construction is down slightly from the same time-period last year – from 39 to 36, total construction values have increased by 13.87 per cent – from $7,804,643 in 2012 to $8,886,862 in 2013. Quarterly residential building stats reflect new construction for single-family, medium-density and high-density housing.

CALGARY — The estimated value of building permits in March in Calgary reached $476.7 million, up 25 per cent from a year ago.
The City of Calgary says the increase in value is due to the residential sector which rose by 56 per cent to $341.6 million while the non-residential sector fell by 18 per cent to $135.1 million.

CALGARY — The value of building permits in the Calgary region reached $520.8 million in February, according to Statistics Canada.
The federal agency reported Tuesday that permits were up 32.0 per cent on a monthly basis and by 18.2 per cent year-over-year for the Calgary census metropolitan area.

Developers have some catching up to do if Red Deer’s 2013 building permit tally is going to match last year’s total.
As of March 31, the city’s Inspections and Licensing Department had issued 303 building permits for $38.1 million in work.
